Liverpool With a Dog

Dog-friendly things to do, walks and places to stop — including an easy city-centre route and ideas for Liverpool's parks and coast.

Yes — Liverpool can work well with a dog.

Much of the waterfront sightseeing is outdoors, Liverpool ONE has many dog-friendly businesses, and Liverpool Cathedral currently welcomes well-behaved dogs inside. Policies can change, so check before travelling.

An easy dog-friendly day in central Liverpool

1. Waterfront & Pier Head

Start around Pier Head for the Liver Building, river views and the Beatles Statue without needing an indoor attraction.

2. Royal Albert Dock

Continue around the dock exterior and waterside paths for an easy sightseeing stretch with your dog.

3. Liverpool ONE

Liverpool ONE publishes a current list of dog-friendly shops, cafés and restaurants. Dogs should be kept on a lead.

4. Liverpool Cathedral

A useful indoor stop: Liverpool Cathedral currently states that it is dog friendly and welcomes well-behaved dogs.

5. St James' Gardens

The gardens beside the Cathedral are a natural continuation. Liverpool's rules require dogs to be on leads in cemetery grounds.

6. Food or a drink

Finish somewhere that explicitly accepts dogs rather than assuming. Current venue policies are worth checking on the day.

Best dog walks around Liverpool

Sefton Park

A strong option for more green space. Note that dogs are excluded from certain areas such as enclosed playgrounds, sports pitches, lakes and some walled gardens.

Otterspool Promenade

A straightforward riverside option south of the centre, combining a proper walk with Mersey views.

Crosby coast

A good coastal option with Antony Gormley's Another Place. Check local signage and tide conditions when visiting.

Formby

Beach, dunes and woodland. The National Trust welcomes well-behaved dogs but asks owners to keep them under close control around wildlife and other visitors.

Can I take my dog on Liverpool tours?

Don't assume so. Coach, stadium, museum and indoor experiences may restrict dogs, and operator policies change. Check the specific operator before paying.

A self-guided waterfront/city-centre day works particularly well with a dog. If someone can look after the dog for part of the day, you can add one of Liverpool's headline bookable experiences separately.

Beatles fan?

Enjoy the outdoor sights with your dog, then compare dedicated Beatles experiences if you have dog care arranged.

Useful dog rules

Liverpool City Council says dogs must be under control in public spaces. Dogs are prohibited from various areas including enclosed playgrounds, sports pitches and park lakes/ponds, while leads are compulsory in specified locations including cemeteries. Follow signs at each location.

Don't confuse the two cathedrals

Liverpool Cathedral currently welcomes well-behaved dogs. The Metropolitan Cathedral currently says only assistance dogs are permitted inside.
